Cab from Bagdogra: Airport Transfers to Siliguri, Darjeeling, Gangtok and Beyond
By Admin / November 4, 2026
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is where most trips to the eastern Himalayas begin. Very few people stay in Bagdogra itself. Within an hour of landing, most travellers are on their way to Siliguri, up to Darjeeling, or on the long road along the Teesta to Gangtok. So the cab from Bagdogra matters more than it seems. It is the first part of your holiday, and on hill routes it can last four or five hours.
This guide covers what to expect at the airport, how long the common routes take, which car to choose, and how to book a cab from Bagdogra without paying more than you should. We are Maa Shree Holiday, a travel company based in Salugara, Siliguri, and we arrange these transfers every day.
How to Get a Cab from Bagdogra Airport
Short answer: you have two reliable options. You can book a taxi at the prepaid counter inside the arrivals hall, or you can pre-book a private cab whose driver meets you at arrivals.
Ride-hailing apps are not dependable at Bagdogra, so don’t plan your arrival around getting an app cab. There is also no shared jeep straight from the airport. Shared jeeps to Darjeeling and Gangtok leave from the SNT stand in Siliguri, so you would still need a taxi into town first.
Prepaid taxi vs pre-booked cab
The prepaid counter is useful if you arrive without a plan. You pay a fixed fare at the counter and are given a car. The downsides are queues when several flights land together, and less say over which vehicle you get.
A pre-booked cab is the better choice if:
- You are a family or group with luggage and need a particular car size
- You are heading to the hills and want an SUV with a driver who knows the route
- Your flight lands late, or you would rather not queue after a long journey
- You want the same car and driver for a multi-day trip, not just the transfer
When you pre-book with Maa Shree Holiday, we share the driver’s name and phone number before you land. The driver waits in the arrivals area with a name placard.
Popular Routes for a Cab from Bagdogra
Travel times depend on traffic, the weather and road work, especially on the hill sections. Use the figures below as planning estimates, not promises.
Bagdogra to Siliguri
This is the shortest and most common run, about 12 to 16 km, and usually 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Many travellers stop overnight in Siliguri after a late flight before heading into the hills the next morning. That is a sensible choice in winter, when it gets dark early on mountain roads.
Bagdogra to Darjeeling
Expect three to four hours, climbing through Kurseong, or via Mirik if you want a more scenic route. The road is steep and winding in places, so a comfortable car matters more than on flat roads. Our Darjeeling 4 days tour package and Darjeeling Mirik tour packages include the airport pickup if you would rather not arrange it separately.
Bagdogra to Gangtok
This is the most booked hill route, around 120 km. Plan for four to five hours. The drive follows the Teesta valley through Sevoke and Rangpo, and the Rangpo stretch can slow down with traffic and road widening work. If you are flying in specifically for Sikkim, see our guide to the Sikkim tour package from Siliguri, which covers permits and cabs together.
Bagdogra to Kalimpong, Pelling and other destinations
Kalimpong is about 75 km away, usually two and a half to three hours. Pelling in West Sikkim is one of the longer runs, so plan on spending most of the day travelling. We also run regular cabs from Bagdogra to Lava, Lolegaon, Lamahatta, Ravangla, Namchi, Jaldapara, Lataguri and the Dooars, Jaigaon, and on to Bhutan (Thimphu and Punakha). Longer one-way drops to Guwahati, Malda, Kolkata and Bihar are also available.
Which Car Should You Book?
The right car depends on two things: the road and the number of people.
- Hatchback or sedan (e.g. Dzire, Etios): Good for Siliguri, NJP and flat routes to the Dooars when you are one or two people with light luggage.
- SUV (e.g. Innova, Ertiga, Bolero): The recommended choice for Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kalimpong and Pelling. Better ground clearance, more legroom on long climbs, and space for luggage on the roof carrier or in the boot.
- Innova Crysta or larger: Best for families of five or six, senior travellers, or anyone who wants a smoother ride on a four-to-five-hour mountain drive.
Here is a simple rule: if your route goes uphill for more than an hour, book an SUV. The small difference in fare is worth it on hairpin bends.
What Affects the Fare for a Cab from Bagdogra?
We don’t list fixed prices in this article because they change with the season and the car. These are the factors that decide what you pay:
- Car type. SUVs cost more than sedans, and premium models cost more again.
- One-way or round trip. A one-way drop to the hills is usually priced to cover the driver’s empty return.
- Season. Peak periods such as October to early June, the Puja holidays and the year-end holidays see higher demand.
- Coming back down. Fares from the hills down to Bagdogra are often higher than the trip up, for the same empty-return reason.
- Extras. Ask whether tolls, parking, night charges and waiting time are included.
Tip: When you get a quote, ask: “Is this the full door-to-door price, including tolls and the driver’s allowance?” A clear yes protects you from surprises at drop-off.

Permits, Weather and Timing: What to Know Before You Land
Permits for Sikkim
Indian citizens don’t need a permit to visit Gangtok. Protected areas such as Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, Nathula, and North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen, Gurudongmar) do need permits, and these are processed through registered travel agents. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim. If any of these places are on your plan, tell us when you book so we can arrange the paperwork and the transport together. Our Sikkim car rental and taxi booking page explains how we handle multi-day Sikkim trips.
Monsoon season
From about June to September, landslides can close or narrow parts of the Darjeeling and Gangtok roads, sometimes with little warning. If you are travelling then, keep some buffer time, avoid booking a tight connection on the same day, and let your driver choose the safest route on the day.
Late arrivals
If your flight lands in the evening, consider spending the night in Siliguri and starting for the hills after breakfast. Mountain roads are easier and safer in daylight, and you will arrive rested instead of exhausted.
Combine Your Cab with a Stay or Tour
A cab from Bagdogra is often only the first part of a larger trip. Maa Shree Holiday arranges the whole journey, so the same team handles your car, your hotel and your sightseeing. Our tie-up hotels include:

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Siliguri from Bagdogra Airport?
Siliguri is about 12 to 16 km from Bagdogra Airport, depending on where in the city you are going. The drive usually takes 20 to 40 minutes.
Is Ola or Uber available at Bagdogra Airport?
App-based cabs are not reliable at Bagdogra. Use the prepaid taxi counter in arrivals, or pre-book a cab so a driver is waiting when you land.
Can I get a shared cab from Bagdogra to Darjeeling or Gangtok?
Not directly from the airport. Shared jeeps leave from the SNT stand in Siliguri, so you would first need a taxi into the city. For families or anyone with luggage, a private cab from the airport is usually more practical.
How long does a cab from Bagdogra to Gangtok take?
Usually four to five hours for roughly 120 km. Traffic near Rangpo and monsoon road conditions can add time.
Which car is best for the hill routes from Bagdogra?
An SUV such as an Innova, Ertiga or Bolero. It handles steep, winding roads better and gives you more space for luggage.
Should I book my Bagdogra cab in advance?
Yes, especially during peak season, for early-morning or late-night flights, or if you need a specific car size. Booking in advance also fixes your fare before you travel.
